The Danger of Passenger Ejections

According to, 9,000 people are killed and 20,000 are injured because of vehicle ejections every year. Almost 75 percent of all people ejected from a vehicle will die from their injuries.

There are many reasons why passengers are ejected from vehicles during a collision. A significant number of ejections happen when people fail to wear seatbelts.

Defective auto parts, particularly faulty safety devices in the vehicle, can contribute to ejections as well. For example, if the vehicle has a faulty seatbelt, it may unlatch at the time of a crash. If there is a faulty door latch, it may prevent the door from remaining closed while the vehicle is in motion. Defective window glass and windshields can also result in passenger ejections.

A report issued by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that 28 percent of all fatal injuries in vehicle accidents involve passenger ejections.

Rollover Accidents

Another contributing factor in many ejection accidents is vehicle rollover. When a car rolls over or overturns during a crash, there’s a chance that the people will slide out from the seatbelt or be propelled outside the vehicle. According to a study by the Society of American Engineers, completely ejected occupants make up about 50 percent of all deaths from rollover accidents.
