COMMON TYPES OF HEAD INJURIES
A head injury may result from any type of bicycle accident, be it a “dooring” crash or a direct hit from a moving motor vehicle, though certain head injuries are more common in incidents where the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet. The most common types of head injuries include:
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI), specifically concussions;
- Contusion, or bruise on the brain;
- Scalp injuries; and
- Skull fractures.
Swelling of the brain, as well as bleeding in and around the brain, are common consequences of serious head injuries and can cause permanent damage to the brain as the result of compressing and/or applying undue pressure to the brain tissue.
HEAD INJURY PROGNOSIS
Brain tissue, unlike other organ tissues, does not heal itself or regenerate. It is possible for the brain to create new connections to bypass damaged sections, but, generally, if the brain is seriously injured after head trauma, the victim may be left with life-long disabilities.
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), about half of all severe head injury patients need surgery to repair or remove contusions (bruised brain tissue) and hematomas (ruptured blood vessels). Even after the repair or removal of the damaged brain tissue, patients may suffer disabilities. Some common disabilities include:
- Cognitive problems;
- Problems in sensory processing;
- Mental health or behavior problems/changes; and
- Communication problems.
A very serious brain injury may even result in an unresponsive state, vegetative state, or stupor. This is, by far, one of the most emotionally difficult situations for a victim’s family.
HOW AN EXPERIENCED ATTORNEY CAN HELP
All head injuries can potentially cause brain damage, which can then lead to dilapidating physical and/or mental disabilities. A head injury victim and their family faces inordinate medical costs associated with treatment, rehabilitation, and even at-home care, as well as mental anguish and/or emotional distress, pain and suffering, lost future income, lower quality of life, and other losses. They do not have to, nor do they deserve, to face these hardships on their own, however.
