Truckers are supposed to be professional drivers, but they end up causing many accidents in New Jersey each year. While the average truck driver might be responsible, there are enough negligent truckers to present all kinds of hazards for average motorists in New Jersey. Within the past month alone, numerous people have been injured or killed due to truck accidents. Often, truckers feel pressured to drive in a reckless manner to meet quotas and difficult schedules. In other situations, they become distracted due to the monotonous nature of long-haul driving. Some even take intoxicating drugs that affect their ability to drive safely. The following recent truck accidents in New Jersey illustrate just how dangerous the trucking industry has become:
Woman Critically Injured in Cumberland County After Accident With Tractor-Trailer
On August 17, 2023, it was reported that a woman had been critically injured after an accident involving a semi-truck in Cumberland County. She was apparently driving down a road in Bridgeton when a semi-truck suddenly pulled out from an intersection. With no time to respond, she impacted the larger vehicle. This resulted in injuries that were so serious that she had to be airlifted to the nearest hospital. Fortunately, she survived the crash – albeit with injuries that are likely life-changing.
The trucker was quickly deemed to be at fault for the crash. Police issued several criminal charges against him, including operating a vehicle without insurance, operating a vehicle without registration, driving with a suspended license, and careless driving. It seems that this individual also had a criminal record, as he was quickly incarcerated for a warrant that was unrelated to the crash. It is not clear how this individual was able to get behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle, but the trucking company’s hiring practices may be to blame.
Police Search for Hit-And-Run Trucker After Deadly Accident
On August 24, the New Jersey State Police appealed to the public for assistance in their search for a trucker who had fled the scene of a deadly crash. It is not clear what caused the crash, but it involved a box truck and a semi-truck colliding in East Brunswick. The impact to the box truck seems to have been localized to the driver’s door area, suggesting that this was a T-bone accident. Like the aforementioned accident, this might have occurred due to the truck pulling out of an intersection in a reckless manner.
Details are still hazy due to the fact that the truck driver fled the scene. The fact that the driver fled suggests that they felt some degree of guilt about the incident, perhaps indicating that they were at fault. Unfortunately, these hit-and-run accidents are all too common in New Jersey.
Driver Killed After Collision With Tractor-Trailer
On August 18, it was reported that an elderly driver had lost her life after a collision with a tractor-trailer in Upper Pittsgrove. She and one other passenger were apparently traveling north when their vehicle was struck by a semi-truck heading east. The nature of the accident suggests that this was yet another intersection collision, meaning one vehicle almost certainly failed to yield the right of way. Reports suggest that the truck probably had the right of way, although the crash remains under investigation.
Woman Dies After Collision With Dump Truck
On September 3, it was reported that a New Jersey woman had lost her life in a three-vehicle crash involving a dump truck. The incident occurred in Pilesgrove as the woman was riding as a passenger in a vehicle heading down Route 40. When the driver of the vehicle stopped to make a left-hand turn into a driveway, a semi-truck slammed into them. This impact pushed the vehicle into oncoming traffic, and it was struck a second time by another passenger vehicle. This caused catastrophic, fatal injuries for the female passenger and serious injuries for the driver. It is worth noting that rear-end accidents often occur because drivers follow too closely without leaving enough space.
