COMMON BICYCLE ACCIDENT INJURIES

Bicycle accidents commonly result in; concussions and other brain injuries, cuts, road rash, bruising, and broken or fractured bones. Some of the more commonly fractured bones include:

  • Hip fractures – very common in “dooring” accidents and direct collisions with motor vehicles.
  • Hand, wrist and arm fractures – common in direct collisions with motor vehicles, but can occur after any type of crash as cyclists tend to try and break their fall with their hands and arms.
  • Leg fractures – common in any type of direct collision with a motor vehicle.

TYPES OF BONE FRACTURES

A cyclists chances for a full recovery from a bone fracture are linked to how many bones were actually broken and what kind of breaks occurred. There are five categories of fractures:

  • Simple or closed fracture – the bone breaks but does not penetrate through the skin. Simple fractures are the quickest to heal and usually do so completely.
  • Compound or open fracture – the bone breaks and pierces through the skin. The broken bone in a compound fracture must be cleaned and set back into place before it can be allowed to heal. The chance for infection is much greater with a compound fracture, however.
  • Transverse fracture – the break occurs at right angles to the long axis of the bone.
  • Greenstick fracture – the break occurs on one side of the bone, causing the other side to bend.
  • Comminuted fracture – the break results in at least three bone fragments.

Immediate medical attention is essential after a bone is broken in an accident, especially for the more serious types of fractures. Even with the proper treatment, it is possible that the accident victim will suffer from limited mobility or another type of disability following the break.
