Approximately 185,000 people experience amputations each year.
Rates & Risks
The Amputee Coalition of America estimates there are over 2 million people living in the United States with some form of amputation. Vascular disease accounts for a half of the amputations performed every year, with a staggering 45 percent caused by trauma or collision. Those are significant numbers when you consider the potential complications and dangers that can develop as a result of an emergency amputation:
Heart Failure – Amputating a limb is a delicate balance, and often, the stress of the event can induce cardiac arrest before or after the procedure is finished.
Blood Clots – Removal of an entire limb forces the body to heal rapidly. Sometimes blood clots can get loose and enter a victim’s lungs, causing immediate dangerous complications.
Infection – There is a large amount of exposed tissue and pathways exposed during and after an amputation. This exposure can lead to viral or bacterial infections throughout the body.
Phantom Limb Pain – A condition unique to amputees, phantom limb pain is a sensation that echoes from a limb that is no longer there. It is a very real condition that afflicts almost 80 percent of amputees at some point following their procedure.
Psychological Trauma – The shock of losing a limb can have a lasting impact on an individual. Amputees often suffer from a wide range of mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, and in severe cases, as with military service men or car accident victims, post-traumatic stress disorder.
Partial Amputations
Amputations may be performed in part or whole. While a complete amputation will remove the entire limb that has been affected, a partial amputation might take place if there is soft tissue remaining that still connects the limb to the body. Despite being able to keep part of the limb, patients frequently lose the functionality it once had. The same risks apply with partial amputations as they do to complete ones, and the need for future medical care will be imminent.
Medical Treatment
The financial expenses associated with complete and partial amputations can create a serious burden. Treatment may include being fitted for a prosthetic device to minimize the loss of use, which costs thousands of dollars. In addition, the physical limitations can lead to a significant loss in earnings. Because of the emotional impact of no longer having the full capabilities of the body, psychological support might also be necessary. Without receiving proper restitution, it can be a challenge for amputation victims to make a full recovery.
