Did a Tanker Cause You Serious Harm? We’re Here to Help
While trucking is an important part of the economy in New Jersey and throughout the country, truckers need to be aware of the risks these vehicles represent. Tanker trucks in particular can have a devastating effect on accident victims due to their added weight and potentially volatile cargo.

But taking on a commercial trucking company in court can be a harrowing experience if you do not have the right legal team. The Added Danger of Tanker Trucks
Drivers on New Jersey roadways will encounter tanker trucks of all sizes, from “small” six-wheelers to mammoth 18-wheelers. Regardless of size, each of these trucks represents a grave danger. Unlike stable cargo, which is tied down and should not shift during transit, the liquid in a tanker truck is constantly moving and shifting the weight of the truck. As a result, any sudden movement, such as a swerve or a hard hit on the brakes, will cause the liquid to shift quickly. This motion can cause the truck to become top-heavy and roll over or go into an uncontrolled skid.
Some environments can automatically cause a tanker truck to become unstable. When a tanker is being driven on a slope, the liquid will shift to the low side of the tank, creating an imbalance in the load. Should the truck turn to that lower side, it is much more likely the liquid will continue to shift and tip the truck over. In addition, a tanker truck that is turning can be far more susceptible to tipping over in a high-wind situation.
Hazardous Cargo
While some tanker trucks are carrying harmless liquids such as milk, water, or other food products, tankers also carry highly hazardous materials. Some of these liquids include:
- Diesel fuel or gasoline
- Industrial chemicals or solvents
- Agricultural chemicals
- Radioactive materials
When these tankers are involved in a collision and begin to leak, there is an added danger. Depending on the liquid, rescue workers might not be able to assist victims until a HAZMAT crew is dispatched and is able to contain the spill.
Common Causes of Tanker Truck Accidents
Many tanker truck accidents are caused by negligent drivers. The trucker may be distracted, driving under the influence of an illegal substance, speeding, or driving while excessively tired. But there are other dangers unique to tanker trucks. These include a driver who is not qualified or trained to operate a tanker truck, a driver who chooses to drive a tanker in dangerous conditions such as a steep lateral grade or in slippery conditions, and a tanker truck that is not functioning properly because of poor maintenance.
