A recent slew of bicycle accidents in New Jersey has led to numerous injuries and deaths. These incidents highlight just how vulnerable cyclists are to vehicles, especially those driven by negligent individuals. Some of these incidents have affected minors. Some incidents have resulted in negligent drivers fleeing from the scene of accidents. Bicycle accidents can be particularly difficult for the families of the victims, who may struggle with issues like medical bills and funeral expenses. If you have experienced something like this, consider speaking with a personal injury attorney.
Cyclist Run Over by Multiple Vehicles in Monroe Township
In November of 2025, Patch reported that a cyclist had been struck by multiple vehicles in Monroe Township. The cyclist was reportedly trying to cross an intersection when he fell onto the roadway. Two vehicles then ran him over as he lay on the ground. Despite the fact that numerous drivers struck the cyclist, no criminal charges were filed by the authorities in connection with this incident.
Both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with police officers. It is likely that this incident occurred within a few seconds, giving the drivers no time to react. This goes to show that even a simple mistake from a cyclist may cause them to lose their balance and fall to the ground. Once a cyclist is on the ground, they are totally at the mercy of passing motorists. It is no wonder that many of these incidents prove fatal.
Man Charged With Leaving the Scene of an E-Bike Crash in Brick Township
Also in November of 2025, a man in Brick Township faced charges after fleeing the scene of an e-bike accident. The crash left a 15-year-old cyclist wounded, although the child’s condition later stabilized. Police say that the crash occurred at around 11 PM, and it involved the defendant making a left-hand turn at an intersection.
During this maneuver, the defendant struck the 15-year-old, who was riding an e-bike. The defendant then failed to stop and continued to drive away. First responders arrived at the crash scene and transported the teen to a local hospital. For whatever reason, the defendant decided to approach the crash scene on foot after parking his vehicle a significant distance away. First responders immediately noticed that he was intoxicated, and officers administered a field sobriety test.
The defendant then failed the field sobriety test, causing his arrest. After his transport to a medical center, the defendant was also subjected to a blood test, although the results of this test are still pending. He now faces numerous charges, including assault by auto and leaving the scene of an accident with a bodily injury. The extent and nature of the child’s injuries were not publicly revealed.
Who Is to Blame for the Rise in Bicycle Accidents in New Jersey?
Bicycle accidents in New Jersey seem to be on the rise, especially those involving e-bikes. As e-bikes become increasingly popular across the Garden State, we can expect to see more of these incidents. Many people instinctively blame e-bike riders for contributing to their own accidents. It is true that e-bikes are capable of much higher speeds than unpowered bicycles, and this inherently increases the risk of serious accidents. E-bikes also pose a risk to pedestrians in many cases, especially when riders operate e-bikes on sidewalks.
That said, negligent drivers should also be on the lookout for e-bikes, especially when making left-hand turns and other maneuvers. Drivers should be particularly wary when moving across bike lanes, where e-bikes may operate at high speeds.
Even if you partially contributed to your own injuries, you may still have the opportunity to file a claim in New Jersey. Under the state’s comparative negligence system, you may file a claim as long as you were not more than 50% responsible for your bicycle accident. This may be something worth discussing with an experienced injury lawyer.
