Can you file an auto accident claim in New Jersey?

13-Year-Old Steals Family Car Before Crashing Into Home

In November of 2025, ABC Action News reported that two teens had stolen a family vehicle before crashing into a private residence. The incident occurred in Washington Township at about 2:30 AM. Two 13-year-olds allegedly smashed into air conditioners, a condo, and a fence while driving the vehicle. Surveillance footage captured the vehicle reversing back onto the road, but the teens subsequently exited and fled on foot.

A neighbor came outside and heard the two girls shouting in panic. Witnesses also describe the smashing noise of the vehicle impacting the building. Many initially believed it was a firearm or a bomb. While no one was hurt, local police say that it could have been much worse. The teens will likely face community service as a result of their joyride.

If someone had been sleeping in a room adjacent to the wall impacted by the out-of-control vehicle, this incident could have been fatal. Indeed, many similar incidents have ended in the deaths of innocent, sleeping people who were totally at the mercy of drunk or negligent drivers.

Vehicle Crashes Into Warren Medical Building

Also in November, Patch reported that a driver had crashed into a medical building in Warren Township. The driver is a 70-year-old resident who veered off the road for unknown reasons. Their vehicle then impacted the front of the building, causing minor structural damage. No one was injured, but the incident occurred during normal working hours. Again, it could have been much worse.

Driver Crashes into Gas Station in Sussex County

In yet another November incident, a driver crashed into a Sussex County gas station. The collision caused a major fire that spread to the gas pumps, and images from the scene show a serious inferno engulfing the crashed vehicle and the gas station. Fortunately, firefighters arrived quickly and brought the blaze under control. Before first responders arrived, bystanders were able to drag the driver out of their vehicle.

WRNJ did not reveal why or how the driver managed to crash into a gas station. But once again, this situation obviously could have been much worse. A fire like this could have led to a major explosion, threatening everyone in the immediate vicinity.

New Jersey 101.5 Highlights the Frequency of Cars Crashing Into Buildings

People in New Jersey are beginning to notice how common it has become for cars to crash into buildings. New Jersey 101.5 argues that there is “rarely a good excuse” for these kinds of crashes, attributing many of the recent incidents to driver negligence. Common misconduct might include texting, speeding, and drinking behind the wheel.

The report also notes that once, it was only elderly drivers who made such blatant mistakes. Today, however, drivers of all ages seem to be crashing into buildings like no tomorrow. What has changed? Could it be the increase in mobile phone use? Perhaps the increase in prescription drug abuse? Whatever the case may be, we are reaching the point where New Jersey residents are no longer safe from negligent drivers, even when they are inside their own homes.

To make matters worse, drivers rarely face criminal penalties for these insane, major mistakes. As long as they have a valid license and police rule out intoxication, these drivers can get back behind the wheel almost instantly after crashing into buildings. Who knows what will happen next?
