Types of Hazardous Road Conditions in New Jersey

While it is our responsibility to drive cautiously at all times, dangerous road conditions are ultimately the responsibility of construction crews and the governing officials who have hired those crews. Negligence on the part of those who are supposed to keep us safe can lead to a variety of dangerous road conditions, such as:

• Potholes
• Obstructed traffic signs
• Construction refuse
• Unsigned curves
• Overgrown trees and other plant life
• Uneven paved roads

Some dangerous road conditions are more obvious than others. Materials left over by construction crews are an example of an obvious dangerous condition. These conditions are often times in plain view and are more easily avoided than other, more discrete, conditions. Improper repair of roads is one such hazard that often goes unnoticed until it’s too late. In this case, what you don’t know, or see, can hurt you. A motor vehicle is a deadly weapon on the road, and conditions that hinder a vehicle from driving safely can create dangerous situations that could have been easily avoided.

Obscured traffic signs are another such danger. If a sign posting a traffic command is not in 100% plain view, then motorists are not being provided every available chance to be safe. Under ideal conditions, a motorist needs only to adhere to the rules of the road, and hope that all other motorists do the same. However, improper signage puts everyone on the road at risk. For instance, if a stop sign is covered up by a nearby shrub, then the motorist who must come to a stop cannot follow the rule. Consequently, the motorist who is intersecting with the stop sign driver, a motorist who is simply minding his or her own business and following his or her own set of traffic laws, is now exposed to the risk of becoming part of a traffic collision. With dangerous road conditions, even the innocent are susceptible to harm, and should not be responsible for the negligence of others.
