Everyone knows that semi-trucks can be incredibly dangerous. Take one look at these heavy, large vehicles, and it becomes quite obvious that they are capable of causing serious damage and terrible injuries. But the dangerous nature of semi-trucks goes far beyond their size and weight. The braking system on a typical semi-truck leaves much to be desired, and the average braking distance for one of these vehicles is well over 500 feet. This means that by the time a trucker has spotted a potential hazard in the distance, it is already too late to slam on the brakes or react safely.

Speaking of truckers, the human aspect of semi-trucks is also a serious cause of concern. Because no matter how safe a semi-truck may be, human error is always a factor. As we have seen time after time, humans are capable of serious misconduct and negligence, including DUIs, distracted driving, speeding, and much more.

Fiery Truck Crash Leads to Countless Injuries

On June 14th, a slew of injuries was reported after a tractor-trailer careened into a number of vehicles on the New Jersey Turnpike. The crash occurred at around 3:30 AM, and it involved a trucker losing control of the vehicle before slamming into a toll booth. To make matters worse, the truck then burst into flames, causing a number of injuries.

The toll booth was not staffed at the time of the impact, suggesting that the injuries were sustained by people in other vehicles. The exact cause of the crash has not been revealed, but it was reported that the truck was carrying furniture. This cargo may have led to an unbalanced load, making it very difficult for the trucker to maintain control of the vehicle.

Trucker Arrested for DUI and Hit-and-Run

In May of 2022, a New Jersey trucker was arrested for a DUI and a hit-and-run after causing a massive crash on I-81. The crash was so severe that it not only damaged several cars, but also a bridge. The accident actually occurred in Virginia, but the trucker’s New Jersey roots made headlines. When police arrived, they found the truck partially hanging from the top of the bridge. The trucker was nowhere to be found. However, he was later discovered walking along the highway in an allegedly intoxicated state. Eventually, he was charged with both a DUI and a hit-and-run. Miraculously, no serious injuries were reported – although several cars were totaled.

Fawn Triggers Mayhem on Route 17

Towards the end of May in 2022, another notable semi-truck crash was reported in New Jersey. It all started when a fawn (a baby deer) dashed onto the road, causing several vehicles to swerve. A trucker immediately jackknifed, causing a second semi-truck to collide with the first. Moments later, an SUV also smashed into the pileup, and a “chain reaction” crash followed. The incident was quite serious, but all three drivers declined medical treatment at the scene. Fuel was also spilled onto the road, and clean-up crews had their hands full for about an hour until the road was finally re-opened. This shows that sometimes, accidents can occur out of nowhere.
