In August of 2025, a driver crashed into a New Jersey fitness center, killing one and injuring others. Although this might seem like a freak accident, the truth is that these incidents are relatively common in the Garden State. Vehicles seem to crash into buildings all the time, and average people are harmed or killed as a result. One of the worst parts about this is that the victims never expected that a vehicle would come crashing through their wall. What can you do if you were injured by a similar incident? What if you lost a loved one to this type of situation? Can an auto accident lawyer in New Jersey help?
“Not Yet Clear” What Caused Driver to Crash Into Fitness Center
Local authorities in Elizabeth are not sure what caused a driver to crash into a fitness center. However, we do know the consequences: One 72-year-old man by the front window of the establishment was killed by the impact, and another 59-year-old man was injured. The second victim survived with lacerations and abrasions, and he was reportedly running on a treadmill when the vehicle came smashing through the front window. The driver of the vehicle, a 69-year-old woman, was also injured due to airbag deployment.
The most recent reports indicate that the driver who crashed is not facing criminal charges. If this is the case, then one has to wonder what caused the driver to veer into a populated building. Did she have some kind of medical emergency? Did another driver swerve into her path, causing her to veer into the building to avoid a collision? Perhaps her vehicle experienced some kind of mechanical or software issue before the crash. The answers to these questions could determine whether the victims and their families can file personal injury lawsuits after this incident.
This Story Is Becoming All Too Common
Unfortunately, these incidents are nothing new in New Jersey. Within the month of August alone, countless drivers have crashed into buildings, and many of these incidents have led to deaths and injuries.
Earlier this month, a vehicle barreled into a restaurant/bar in Hamilton Township. Police say that before this collision, the driver swerved to avoid a collision at an intersection. This maneuver sent the vehicle straight into the restaurant, but miraculously, there were no injuries reported.
A day earlier, a woman suffered critical injuries after crashing her vehicle into a business in Monmouth County. Police say she was driving on Route 547 when she lost control, went over a concrete median, and veered into a parking lot. Her vehicle then smashed into the side of the building and into the interior of the structure. She seems to have been the only person injured in this incident, although it clearly could have been much worse.
Again, police did not reveal how or why the woman lost control of her vehicle. However, they noted that they were planning to investigate the crash in more detail. The real question is whether the woman was to blame for her own injuries, or whether she was forced to veer off the road due to another reckless or negligent motorist.
A few days prior, a school bus barreled into the side of a house at the Jersey Shore. Police say the school bus first went onto the sidewalk before smashing into the home, and images from the scene show passengers escaping the wreckage through the back emergency door of the vehicle. Very little information was released in connection with this crash, including details on injuries, fault, and damage to the residence.
Perhaps the most memorable incident of this nature occurred one year ago in 2024, when an alleged drunk driver crashed into a New Jersey nail salon and killed four people.
