Recklessness and negligence have hit all-time highs on the roads of New Jersey after several shocking crashes. These incidents involve intoxicated motorists and hit-and-run drivers. Some have left victims dead, while others have caused catastrophic injuries. In at least one case, young children narrowly escaped from a drunk, out-of-control driver. If you have been harmed by similar conduct, consider speaking with an experienced New Jersey car accident lawyer at your earliest convenience.
Drunk Driver Hits Mother and Children Outside Preschool
One of the most heinous displays of drunk driving in recent memory occurred in February of 2026 when an intoxicated motorist struck a mother and her two children as they were exiting a preschool. The incident occurred in Freehold, and it quickly made headlines around the country. Footage of the incident also went viral, and it showed the children and the mother narrowly escaping more serious injuries.
Officials say that at about 3:00 PM, an SUV reversed into the victims and hit all three. In the split seconds before impact, the mother attempted to grab hold of both her children and pull them to safety. She succeeded only partially. The SUV struck the youngest son first, and the footage shows the tire slamming onto the boy’s leg and knocking off his shoe. The child also suffered burns after being exposed to the hot undercarriage of the vehicle.
The SUV then struck the mother, causing her to suffer back and neck injuries. In addition to hitting and injuring the second child, the SUV damaged a railing and a door on the preschool buildings. Early reports indicate that the person behind the wheel of the SUV was another parent in the process of picking up her child. She was reportedly arrested by local police and taken into custody for intoxicated driving. Fox 29 subsequently reported that she was facing charges of DWI, assault by auto, and child endangerment.
Man Arrested After Injuring Three Teens in New Jersey Hit-and-Run
Another negligent driver injured other New Jersey children in February 2026, carrying out a hit-and-run in Lawrence Township before his eventual arrest. Officials say that the 30-year-old motorist veered onto the right shoulder before striking three teenage pedestrians. These include a 17-year-old and two 15-year-olds. The 17-year-old suffered the worst injuries, while the younger boys suffered moderate to minor injuries.
Although the suspect fled the scene, local police quickly tracked him down. It is likely that they used surveillance footage to identify the make, model, and license plate number of the defendant’s vehicle before finding him. He now faces three counts of assault by auto and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident involving a serious injury.
Pedestrian Left Critically Injured After Washington Township Hit-and-Run
February also saw another pedestrian critically injured by a hit-and-run driver, this time in Washington Township. The crash occurred just after 4:30 AM, and it involved the driver of a 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV striking a pedestrian on the shoulder of the road. Unfortunately, these kinds of hit-and-runs are becoming increasingly common in the Garden State.
The driver did not stop or call 911, leaving the victim fighting for their life. First responders then arrived and found the victim lying unconscious in the road, and they eventually airlifted him to a Trauma Center in Camden. Although this victim survived the crash, it is not clear how life-altering his injuries are.
Police were able to use advanced license-plate reader technology to track down the driver of the Mercedes SUV. As of this writing, it seems as though the authorities are still attempting to track this individual down. That said, police are still urging any witnesses who might have seen the collision to come forward and provide additional information. The use of advanced technology is helping police officers track down hit-and-run drivers with considerable success.
Can a New Jersey Auto Accident Lawyer Help Me?
A New Jersey auto accident lawyer may be able to help if you are searching for justice. While all drivers should face accountability for their mistakes, the need for closure is particularly important for victims of intoxicated motorists. The same logic applies to victims of hit-and-run drivers, as it can be especially difficult when you cannot even put a face to the person who caused your injuries. Whether you are recovering from a crash or seeking justice on behalf of a deceased loved one, you are not alone.
