Bellmawr, NJ (November 30th, 2021) – During the morning commute of Tuesday, November 30th, a multi-vehicle accident in Bellmawr closed part of the southbound lanes of Route 42.
The accident happened shortly before 6 in the morning on Tuesday near Intersection 295. It involved a minimum of five vehicles. Two of these vehicles combusted upon collision.
Traffic crews shut down two lanes on the left side of the highway as the case was being investigated and to clear the accident scene. As a result of the road closures, both sides of Route I-295 and Route 42 were traffic jammed leading up to the accident.
The fiery accident remains under investigation. The identities of those involved in the multi-vehicle accident have not yet been released by authorities.
Multi-vehicle accidents can be a frightening experience. Unfortunately, a majority of these accidents also have serious consequences. Depending on the facts of the accident, it may be possible to obtain monetary compensation from the party who caused the accident. Many of these accidents, however, are difficult to pursue as it can be extremely challenging to determine who was responsible for causing the accident.
Auto accidents that involve more than two vehicles can raise the issue of who is to blame for causing the accident and ensuing injuries. When it comes to these types of accidents, it can be difficult to determine which of the drivers is to blame for the accident or if there was an outside party responsible for causing the accident. When establishing fault, it is necessary to follow New Jersey’s “modified joint and several liability” rules.
Based on New Jersey’s “modified joint and several liability” rules, when a party is under 60 percent to blame for an accident, this party will only be held responsible for paying the percentage found at fault. When the at-fault party is more than 60 percent to blame, the party will be held responsible for the entirety of the damages caused by the accident. The at-fault party can also be held jointly and severally liable for the damages.
Multi-vehicle accidents can happen at any given moment and when we least expect them. Despite this, it is important to recognize that there are factors that may increase the risk of this type of accident happening. For instance, harsh weather conditions, such as icy roads or heavy fog may increase the risk of a multi-vehicle accident. This is because these accidents tend to happen when other motorists are not able to see the road ahead and they may fail to react in time when coming upon another accident.
Another factor that may increase the chances of this type of accident to happen is speeding. Speeding is not only reckless, it is also a dangerous action that tends to result in multi-vehicle accidents that cause serious injuries. When a driver is traveling too fast, he or she may not be able to stop in time to avoid an accident. As a result of the force of the initial accident, the vehicles involved are more likely to collide with other surrounding vehicles. Also, due to the sheer force of the accident, the injuries sustained by those involved tend to be more severe.
Distraction is another common factor typically involved in multi-vehicle accidents. Being distracted while driving can sometimes be unavoidable, but it is important for drivers to remain cognizant of the danger of distraction. When traveling down the road even when at low speeds, an accident can happen when the driver’s attention has been diverted off the road for just a few short seconds.
Since more than one party can be held responsible for causing the multi-vehicle accident, these cases usually require a well-versed personal injury attorney to successfully resolve the matter. Generally, these cases cannot be resolved without filing a claim and this will require in-depth investigation. Factors that may delay the case or further complicate it include multiple at-fault parties, death or catastrophic injury, and insufficient insurance.
