Although AI threatens to revolutionize virtually every aspect of our lives, traffic safety is something that most people would agree needs improving. With so many fatalities and catastrophic injuries each year, one has to wonder whether technology will play a role in making cars safer. What kinds of AI solutions might help reduce accidents? Are people really willing to transition toward fully self-driving vehicles? For people who have already suffered traumatic injuries due to New Jersey car accidents, these improvements come far too late.
AI Company Gains Certification for New Jersey’s Traffic Program
In January 2025, a well-known AI company announced that it had received certification for New Jersey’s ALPR Program. The $13 million program involves automatic license plate recognition technology. The company notes that its AI-powered technology may be used in forensic investigations, providing real-time alerts in “critical situations.”
One of the most interesting aspects of this technology is its ability to identify vehicles and registrations with only “partial plate identification.” It also seems to be able to identify plates despite obfuscation. This would imply that AI can help identify negligent drivers, especially those who commit hit-and-runs. Even if drivers attempt to hide their license plate numbers, this AI solution can allegedly bring them to justice.
NVIDIA’s “NoTraffic” Solution Promises to Improve Safety
Another major name in the AI space is NVIDIA, a company that seems to be increasingly involved in traffic safety. Many of its most promising new developments seem to target traffic safety, including self-driving technology.
However, NVIDIA is also exploring AI-based traffic light improvements. Its “NoTraffic” system claims to “mitigate car accidents” by addressing outdated traffic lights that run on “fixed timing plans.” These fixed schedules are inefficient, NVIDIA argues, because they do not account for and predict changes in traffic. NoTraffic is already being used in some US jurisdictions, reportedly reducing road delays by almost 50%.
NoTraffic also reportedly cracks down on drivers who run red lights, providing an 80% reduction in this misconduct. NVIDIA states that this also reduces traffic accidents. One has to wonder whether NVIDIA will continue to have a monopoly on these kinds of solutions, especially with the emergence of rivals like DeepSeek. Whatever the case may be, our traffic lights seem destined to work with AI in the future.
Driverless Semi-Trucks Arrive in Force
Autonomous driving could be particularly revolutionary in the trucking industry. Although replacing human drivers is highly controversial, many argue that it would make our roads much safer. We would no longer need to worry about distracted, tired, or intoxicated truckers behind the wheel.
A company called Kodiak Robotics recently reached a major milestone, having delivered 100 loads of frac sand. The operation began last summer, and it seems to have gone off without a hitch. In January 2025, the company announced that they had successfully delivered a semi-truck to a customer. This was apparently a “world first.”
The company plans to demonstrate that its technology is completely ready for use on major highways. While we have only seen rare glimpses of driverless semi-trucks on public roads, it is becoming clear that they will soon arrive in force.
Will Drivers Accept Driverless Vehicles?
The only real question remaining is whether average New Jersey drivers will accept driverless vehicles. Most people prefer to control their own vehicles, even if the statistics show that driverless technology is safer. It is not clear how the government will eventually wrestle control away from the average citizen and instead put road safety entirely in the hands of an AI solution. There could be significant pushback.
Whatever the case may be, it will be interesting to see how AI will transform road safety in the coming years. With New Jersey already adopting at least one AI solution, the Garden State seems to be one of the leaders in this space. We can only hope that it will reduce injuries and deaths.
Can a New Jersey Car Accident Lawyer Help Me?
