New Jersey may be the garden state, but it is also well known for its traffic. Jam-packed roads and busy highways can result in some of the nastiest accidents in the country, and these circumstances create a prime opportunity for multi-vehicle collisions. Multi-vehicle collisions occur when multiple vehicles are involved in an accident. This can happen when one vehicle rear-ends another, and none of the vehicles behind it are able to stop in time, resulting in countless rear-end accidents or a multi-car pile-up. Multi-vehicle collisions can also occur when a truck overturns or a vehicle crosses the median into oncoming traffic. Regardless of the circumstances leading to a multi-vehicle collision, the results can be catastrophic.
Recovering Damages After a Multi-Vehicle Collision
One of the most challenging aspects of a multi-vehicle collision is the determination of liability. With so many vehicles involved, it can be difficult to determine who was responsible for causing the initial crash and whether other drivers contributed to causing it as well. Depending on the total number of drivers involved, the investigation into multi-vehicle collisions by insurance companies can take several months or even over a year. During this time, victims of the crash may be left wondering if they will ever get the insurance settlement that they need to cover their medical bills and move on with their lives.
When it comes to determining liability in a multi-vehicle crash, the general rule of thumb is that whichever driver was responsible for the initial crash will be responsible for the entire crash. Citing the rear-end example above, the driver who is found responsible for causing the initial rear-end accident (likely the driver who rear-ended the other) will be responsible for all damages caused in the accident. This can cause complications when it comes to insurance coverage because often, an individual will not have sufficient coverage for injuries and damages to dozens of people. This is why it is important to get a lawyer involved as early on as possible in the process. Your lawyer will ensure that an accurate determination of liability is made and pursue all avenues to recovery.

Two vehicles are said to have collided, causing one of the vehicles to then collide with the bus. One of the drivers of the other vehicles involved in the accident also had to be transported to the hospital for injuries.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Collision
If you have been involved in a multi-vehicle collision, it’s important to collect as much evidence at the scene of the accident as possible, provided that you are physically able to do so. Make sure to take pictures and video of damage to all involved vehicles, as well as of the scene of the accident. Get license, registration, insurance, and contact information from all involved drivers, and be sure to get contact information from anyone who may have witnessed the accident. Then be sure to file a police report, seek medical care, and talk to an attorney as soon as possible. Talk to an attorney before talking to any insurance claims adjusters, or you may end up shooting yourself in the foot when it comes to getting a good settlement.
