Bergen County, NJ (September 2nd, 2022) – In the early morning hours of Friday, multiple people were killed when a passenger van transporting factory workers overturned in northern New Jersey.

The deadly accident happened on a major highway on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Englewood Cliffs. Upon collision, the vehicle ended in the center median on the highway’s southbound lanes. This left the van’s driver and its passengers trapped in the vehicle.

Paramedics arrived at the scene at about 1:30 a.m. and declared four individuals dead at the scene. First responders also worked to treat eight other victims before the victims were rushed to local hospitals. It is reported that multiple victims needed to be extricated from the crushed van by first responders.

According to official statements, the vehicle was traveling from New York City. The single-vehicle accident involved a Ford Econoline 350, which resulted in injuries ranging from catastrophic head injuries to minor injuries.

The names of those involved are being withheld at this time pending further investigation. Other details regarding the accident have also not been released. The cause of the fatal accident is still under police investigation. Aside from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Unit, the local police department and the sheriff’s office are also conducting an investigation.

When utilizing a mass transit vehicle, passengers entrust their safety and well-being to those who are in charge of operating these vehicles. Passengers routinely rely on the knowledge, experience, and training these types of drivers receive.

Aside from this, transportation companies are also entrusted with the safety and well-being of their passengers. These companies are not only responsible for hiring the drivers that transport passengers, but they are also responsible for the maintenance these vehicles require. Consequently, transit companies owe a duty of care to the people who use their transportation services.

Whenever a passenger is injured while in a company vehicle, transportation companies must be held liable when a person sustains an injury. While mass transit accidents rarely occur, they still happen every year across the State of New Jersey. Some of these accidents happen as a result of the recklessness of other drivers but they can also happen as a result of the negligence committed by the transit vehicle driver or the company itself.

Mass transit accidents can happen for a variety of reasons. As previously mentioned, mass transit accidents can sometimes happen as a result of other drivers on the road. They can be caused when another driver is driving while intoxicated, sleep-deprived, or speeding. Regrettably, these accidents also happen as a result of the vehicle driver’s negligence. Common causes of accidents caused by driver error include driver inattention, fatigue, driving while under the influence, careless driving, speeding, or failure to yield.

Aside from the transit vehicle operator, mass transit companies and agencies can also be held responsible in the event of an injury-causing accident. Like drivers on the road, mass transit companies owe a duty of care to their passengers and others who share the road with their vehicles. If the company is negligent in ensuring that their vehicles are safe for use on the road, these companies can be held liable for the injuries and damages people sustain in an accident.

Whether or not the accident was caused as a result of the transportation company, company driver, or others, being injured in a traffic accident can have long-lasting repercussions. After an accident, victims can be left with fractured and broken bones, lacerations, torn ligaments, bruising, road rash, burns, facial injuries, catastrophic head injuries, or even spinal cord injuries. The severity of these injuries is often extreme since mass transport vehicles generally do not have safety measures typically found in regular passenger vehicles. For instance, mass transport vehicles will often lack seatbelts. No matter how small or serious the injury is after an accident, however, the injury can take an extended amount of time to heal.

As a result of the severity of some of these injuries, victims can quickly exhaust their insurance coverage. When a deadly traffic accident happens, the surviving family members can also be left with significant financial burdens that surpass insurance policies. Expenses such as funeral costs, medical bills, and the loss of the victim’s income can set back entire families for many years to come. As a result of the significant losses that can result from a mass transit accident, victims and their families should consider working alongside an established attorney who can fight for maximum compensation.

As a result of the complexity of these cases and because mass transit vehicles are generally run by major corporations or government agencies, it is important for those seeking compensation to obtain the support of a qualified personal injury attorney. A well-versed litigator will have the skills and experience necessary to confront the transportation agency and fight for the victim’s right to full compensation.

Whenever a transportation agency causes an accident that results in the injuries of their passengers, the agency must be held accountable and cover the victim’s medical costs, loss of income, pain and suffering, and other losses. Unfortunately, these agencies will rarely agree to pay victims what they truly deserve. Instead, the at-fault party and its insurers will work tirelessly to ensure the victim’s damages are undermined and that the least amount of compensation is paid out to him or her.

If you or someone you love was recently hurt while in a transportation vehicle being driven by someone else, you will need to take swift action to protect your interests. Obtain the support of a knowledgeable personal injury attorney early in the process so that the attorney can begin working on safeguarding important evidence on your behalf and fight for the compensation you truly deserve.
