Two Women Die After Semi-Truck Overturns Onto Them
On August 25th, 2026, multiple sources reported that a semi-truck had overturned on I-78, crushing two women in the process. The two victims were inside their small sedan when the trailer toppled onto them, causing fatal wounds. Although the exact circumstances of the collision aren’t clear, officials implied that the trucker approached traffic congestion too fast before swerving. The sudden maneuver caused the semi-truck to overturn, a sight that has become all too common on our roads.
Images from the scene show the white sedan absolutely flattened by the impact. This incident is a stark reminder of just how dangerous semi-trucks can be, and those inside smaller sedans have little chance of survival when a heavy trailer topples onto them. Officials say that the crash is still under investigation, and it is not clear whether the trucker will face any penalties.
Unfortunately, semi-truck rollover crashes are relatively common in New Jersey. Just one day before this fatal collision, another semi-truck rolled over in East Brunswick. This incident occurred on Route 18, and officials say that the trucker “lost directional control” before swerving on an entrance ramp and flipping over. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, although the incident caused considerable traffic congestion. Still, the crash illustrates just how common semi-truck rollovers have become.
A similar incident occurred months ago in May of 2026. The crash involved a semi-truck flipping over on I-80 and crushing an SUV. Images from the scene showed the SUV wedged between a concrete median, with the semi-truck completely on top of it. The driver of the SUV suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized by first responders.
Of course, truckers may cause many other types of collisions aside from rollover crashes. One example came recently in August of 2026, when a trucker rear-ended a disabled vehicle on the New Jersey Turnpike. The accident was also fatal, killing the victim while they sat inside their stalled vehicle, and it only occurred because the trucker inexplicably entered the right shoulder. It is not clear why the trucker veered onto the shoulder, but these kinds of incidents routinely claim the lives of motorists in New Jersey.
What Causes a Semi-Truck to Roll Over?
Various factors can cause a semi-truck to roll over. As previous incidents show, this type of crash can easily occur if a trucker slams on the brakes too quickly or swerves to avoid a collision. Semi-trucks are far from agile, and their heavy, lumbering nature makes them particularly susceptible to rollover crashes.
That said, it is important to realize that truckers are not always to blame for rollover crashes. Sometimes, semi-trucks flip over because another negligent driver caused a crash. A trucker might have virtually no control if someone crashes up ahead, and they may slam into other vehicles before rolling over. In situations like these, victims may be able to sue both the trucking company and the negligent driver who sparked the initial collision.
Some causes of rollover crashes are much more subtle. Heavy crosswinds can topple semi-trucks, and although this might seem unthinkable, trailers can easily capture the wind’s energy (much like a sail).
