Every day, an older individual somewhere in the nation is suffering from elder abuse. It may have occurred in a nursing facility. It may have taken place in the person’s own home. Unfortunately, as a country we have grown all too accustom to these kinds of incidents. What is worse, there are those who actually cover up abuse instead of reporting it.

But, there are people who actually do take a stand. A licensed practical nurse at the Voorhees Center nursing home has put the spotlight on abuse there. The woman claims that she was forced to leave her job after she spoke out. One incident in particular – involving an 85-year old woman with dementia tied to her wheelchair – disturbed the nurse. After filing a report, the 8-year veteran received an anonymous letter that stated “snitches get stitches.”

Since being forced from her job, the nurse has filed a suit against the home and its owner, Genesis Healthcare. Further allegations of abuse have also come to light, which suggests an investigation may be next.

Remember, if you suspect a loved one is being abused in a care home or nursing facility, you have rights. Don’t let those who have broken your trust continue to do so.
