One of the most challenging aspects of hit-and-runs in New Jersey is finding the driver responsible. However, recent reports from the Garden State show that these negligent drivers are often apprehended and held accountable by our criminal justice system. Aside from criminal charges, hit-and-run motorists also face civil consequences for their actions – including auto accident lawsuits. If you have been affected by a hit-and-run in New Jersey, you should not give up on justice and closure. Speak with an experienced auto accident lawyer, and you may find it easier to pursue the compensation you deserve.
Police Searching for Fleeing Street Racers After Major Crash
In February of 2025, police in Mount Holly announced that they were searching for illegal street racers after they allegedly caused a fatal collision. The crash occurred on Route 38, and it caused a vehicle to flip over and catch fire. Although police officers dragged the driver out of the burning vehicle, he later succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital. It is likely that this victim suffered fatal burn injuries. The fire on the man’s body was so intense that the officers who dragged him out also suffered severe burns to their hands. A second vehicle also crashed, and that driver was also hospitalized.
Police did not reveal whether the victims were participating in the illegal street race at the time of the crash. However, they did say that the crash was a “result of” the street race. They are now trying to track down the other street racers involved in the incident. Even if all parties involved agreed to participate in the street race, fleeing the scene of a crash is still a major criminal offense in New Jersey – especially if the crash results in a death or serious injury.
Police say they are reviewing hours of nearby surveillance footage to find the racers. They are also questioning witnesses who saw the crashes unfold. In addition, they released a photograph of one vehicle involved in the street race and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Egg Harbor Hit-and-Run Leaves Pedestrian Dead
Also in February of 2025, police in Egg Harbor Township reported that a 40-year-old pedestrian had lost her life after being struck by a motorist. The driver fled the scene after the crash, but local authorities cooperated with police in Philadelphia to locate the suspect’s vehicle. However, the suspect himself is still on the run – and anyone with information about the crash is being urged to come forward. First responders arrived quickly but were unable to save the victim. One can only wonder whether she might have survived if the motorist had pulled over and called 911 immediately.
Pedestrian Critically Injured After Hit-and-Run
Also in February, another pedestrian was critically injured after being struck by a motorist in Union City. The 32-year-old victim barely survived the crash, and first responders say that she remains in critical condition. No arrests have been made, and police seem to have very little information to go on. The family of this victim must be dealing with considerable psychological turmoil, especially since the person responsible appears to have escaped. In addition, the long-term recovery of the victim remains unclear.
Justice Served After Hit-and-Run Motorist Found Guilty in Mercer County
Although these cases involve hit-and-run motorists who seem to have escaped, these suspects may one day face consequences for their actions. Sometimes, it takes many years before justice is served. This became clear after a man was convicted of fleeing the scene of a fatal accident in Mercer County. This defendant struck a 64-year-old individual riding a scooter and did not bother to stop or call 911. In total, he was convicted of hit-and-run and endangering an injured victim.
Police found the victim lying on the side of the road, complaining of chest pain. He later died from multiple rib fractures, kidney lacerations, and damage to his spleen. The defendant faces up to 10 years in prison.
