BIKING RELATED SPINE INJURY

David Silverstein NJ Bicycle Accident Attorney

More and more people are choosing to ride a bike instead of drive a car in the United States. For some, it is a way to get regular exercise, and for others it is a way to save money and be more considerate towards the environment. This increase in bicycle riders also means that there are more bikes on roadways typically dominated by motor vehicles. Many drivers do not know how to share the road with bicycles or are inattentive or distracted, making bicycling much more dangerous than it should be. Because bicyclists are given no protection by their vehicle and typically wear only a helmet in the way of safety gear, a bicycle accident usually results in severe and often life-altering injuries for the bike rider. One of the most common of these is a spinal cord injury.

If you or a loved one has suffered a spinal injury following a bike accident, please contact a New Jersey spine injury lawyer at Lependorf & Silverstein, P.C. at (609) 240-0040 for a free consultation.

WHAT IS A SPINAL CORD INJURY?

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), a spinal injury is caused by a traumatic and/or sudden blow to the spine which results in the dislocation or fracture of vertebraes. The actual damage occurs when displaced disc material, ligaments, or bone fragments tear into or bruise the spinal cord tissue. It is rare that a spinal cord injury completely severs the spinal cord; however, the fractured and or crushed vertebrae can destroy nerve cells, called axons, in the spinal cord. This can result in the interruption of signals being sent from the brain to the rest of the body. Although improved emergency medical care and aggressive treatment and rehabilitation of spinal injuries can help minimize nervous system damage, spinal cord injury victims will likely still suffer the loss of abilities and/or limitations of bodily functions. In severe cases, a victim may be completely paralyzed.

BIKE ACCIDENTS CAUSING SPINAL CORD INJURY

New Jersey Bicycle Accident Spine Injury AttorneyAlthough some bicycle crashes may be caused by potholes and other dangerous road conditions, most involve negligent motor vehicle drivers hitting a bicyclist directly with their vehicle. Such force of impact on the unprotected back of a bicyclist, whether it is hit by the car itself or during the fall after the initial hit, can easily dislocate or break vertebrae, which can then damage the spinal cord.

SPINAL CORD INJURY CONSEQUENCES

A bicyclist who suffers a spinal cord injury faces many challenges on the road to recovery, and this injury is one from which he or she may never fully recover from. Spinal cord injuries often require surgery, as well as other treatment, and a lengthy period of rehabilitation, in addition to emotional and social support. Even after all of this, the victim may never regain the proper functioning of their body below the level of injury. This can result in permanent disability, which can not only prevent the victim from working or ever riding a bike again, but can also cause undue mental anguish and emotional stress, for both the victim and their family. It is unacceptable that so many lives be turned upside down because of one driver’s negligence.
